The Sozopol atelier of the famous Bulgarian artist Alexander Mutafov (1879-1957) is built in 1937. It is adapted to serve as a house-museum in 1976 but is officially inaugurated in 1981. Here are preserved around 60 painting of the artist, who is one of the first Bulgarian marine painters. Born in Shumen, Alexander Mutafov spent his childhood in Varna, where his family relocated. In this city his love for the sea inspired him for his first steps in painting. In Varna Alexander Mutafov studies at the local high school for boys. After tat from 1899 till 1902 he studies in the art academy in Torino under the supervision of prof. Giacomo Grosso. Then he continued his academic education in the art academy of Munich (1902-1909) in the class of prof. Leo von Loftz. Till 1920 Alexander Mutafov works as a teacher in painting in Sofia and Dupnitsa, and since 1921 he is a professor in practical and constructive perspective in the art academy in Sofia. During the Balkan Wars and the First World War, he is a military painter-correspondent in Dobrudja and later in the Black Sea navy in Varna. During this period the artist creates a plethora of small-size drawings and sketches in water colors and ink. At present they are the property of the National Museum of Military History. Later on Alexander Mutafov entirely dedicates himself to seascapes and pictures that depict the life of fishermen and sailors. In his work he uses mainly water colors, pastels, oil paints. The artist has 15 sole exhibitions in Prague, Sofia, Varna, Plovdiv, Stara Zagora. He participated in the exhibitions of the Union of Bulgarian Artists and the Association for Modern Art. He is one of the organizer and participants in the exhibitions of the Association for National Art as well as many other exhibitions presenting Bulgarian art abroad.
