The St Assumption of Mary (Dormition of Theotokos) Church is an orthodox temple and a monument of culture. According to a patriarchal document dating back to 1482 the church is built in the 15th century as a cloister to the monastery St John Precursor and Baptist on the St Ivan island - one of the most important cultural centers during the Ottoman domination, which for Sozopol started in 1453 and ended in 1878. Books from that period are preserved in many places in Bulgaria and the world - Mount Athos, the Vatican, Athens, Moscow, Sofia, Michigan, Uppsala, etc. Just like most of the churches in Sozopol, the St Assumption of Mary Church is built on the foundations of an earlier medieval church and has the typical architectural elements of the Bulgarian churches built during the Ottoman domination: low, made of stone, placed below the ground-level, with a picturesque garden and a separate house, all surrounded by a thick stone wall. Some time before 1969 the church was nationalized and in the same year was made its last restoration. After that it was closed for visits except for very important diplomatic guests of the country. However, in 2005 the St Assumption of Mary Church is open again as a fully functional church. One of the interesting legends around the temple is that one of the ladies that takes care of it discovers in 2005 a small fig under the huge tree in the garden, which had a cross designed on it. Thus the local people were reminded that the crucifix placed in the altar is missing, so they placed a new one. Today in the church are displayed icons from the end of the 17th to the 19th century. They represent the work of the Strandja School of Art. In the 19th century the church was adorned with a beautiful iconostasis made by the famous masters of the Debar School of Art. The St Assumption of Mary Church is located at the corner of the Anaxemander and Vaptsarov streets in the Old Sozopol.
