South Fortress Wall and Tower Museum Complex
The South Fortress Wall and Tower Museum Complex is officially inaugurated in 2004. It is located in the middle of the promenade in the southern part of the Old Sozopol. The museum complex includes the best preserved part of the south fortress wall of Sozopol with a guarding tower. It dates back to the 6th century. The complex also includes a granary from the 5-6th century and an ancient well dating back to the 4-3th century BC. Once the whole territory of Sozopol was surrounded by a thick fortress wall built in 511 AD during the rebellion of general Vitalian, who commanded the eastern army of the Byzantine Empire, against emperor Anastasius I. The original height of the fortress wall is deemed ti be 8-11 meters and its width - 1. 7meters. in the period from the 11th to the 14th century the wall is rebuilt several times. It lost its meaning in the 17th century, when it was demolished. The preserved part of the fortress wall includes a founding fortification called Kortina and the basis of a watch-tower. The tower is added to the wall in the 11-14th century period. Along the whole southern wall there used to be eight such towers, which protected the granary. With a length of 22 meters and a width of 14 meters the granary is the largest ancient building ever discovered in Sozopol. It is preserved to a height of 2.5 meters and a large part of it is exhibited at the ground floor of House Arnautski where in 1995 it was discovered. In the building itself were found many archeological artifacts - coins, amphorae, ceramic pots, etc. The granary was destroyed in 10-11th century during the campaign of John I Tzimiskes in Bulgaria. One of the few entirely preserved wells of ancient Appolonia Pontica is located right next to the museum. It dates back to the 4-3 century BC and functioned as an nymphaeum.
