Church St Zosim
In the Town Park of Sozopol right next to the spacious area with children attractions is located the St Zosim church. It is a small, stone, one-nave church with one apse. Architecturally the church is a pseudo-basilica with two-slope roof, without domes. This type of churches is called pseudo-basilica because it resembles the early Christian temples, whose architectural style originates from the civil buildings of ancient Rome called basilicas. The St Zosim church is built in 1857 on the place of a medieval temple, similar to most of the other churches and chapels in Sozopol. Dedicated to St Zosim of Sozopol, who was born and lived here during the reign of the Roman emperor Trajan (98-117 AD). As a Roman legionary he converted Christianity. However, during the early years of Christianity war was denied in all of its aspects. St Zosim refused to execute his obligations as a soldier and to make sacrifices to the pagan Roman gods, so after terrible tortures he was condemned to death and beheaded. The saint is perceived as a Sozopol martyr and annually on June 19 the town commemorates him. The St Zosim church is adorned with icons painted by the Bulgarian Revival painter Dimitar of Sozopol, representative of the Strandja School of Art. One of the best icons is the one of St John the Baptist painted in 1859, which beautifully demonstrates the style of the iconographer strongly influenced by the European baroque. On the facade of the church is built-in a marble gravestone dating back to the 5th century BC (the period of Appolonia Pontica). The church is open for visits and prayer.
