St Ivan Island
St Ivan Island is one of the symbols of Sozopol. The largest of the five islands on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast (660 sq.km. in size) has always been an active part of the life in ancient Appolonia Pontica and the medieval Sozopolis. In the 7th century BC on St Ivan Island is built a Thracian sanctuary. Three centuries later on its southern coast is built a religious complex, whose center was the bronze statue of Appollo Acestor (the Healer) with height of 13.2 meters. The statue is created by the sculptor Kalamis (470-440 BC). After 330 AD when Christianity was recognized as official religion on the St Ivan Island is built the St Theotokos church, around which in the 5th and 6th century emerged the St John Precursor and Baptist monastery. In the 9th century the monastery became on the most active literary centers in Bulgaria. In 1263 the Byzantine general Michael Tarchaniota built a new church dedicated to St John Prodromos (another word for "precursor" or "forerunner"). A century later emperor John V Palaiologos issued a gold-stamped charter, which affirms the estates of the monastery, which at that time was already called regal. Even during the period of Ottoman domination the monastery remained an important literary center. It is destroyed by the Turkish authorities in 1629. St Ivan Island is unique also in terms of natural wealth. It is inhabited by more than 70 species of birds, including the largest colony of a silver sea-gull in Bulgaria. The birds on the island are listed in the Red Book of Bulgarian for extinct and jeopardized of extinction species. Since 1965 St Ivan Island is listed as a protected natural area with a government decree, published in issue 35, year 1965 of the Official Gazette. St Ivan Island is located 910 meters away from the northernmost point of Stolets peninsula (the Old Sozopol).
